Yes. With a valid Temporary Import Permit (TIP) and mandatory Chinese insurance, foreign-registered cars can be driven in China for up to 6 months. The car must enter and exit through a designated land border — you cannot ship it and collect it inland.
Up to 6 months per permit. The vehicle must exit China before the permit expires, or you risk fines and customs penalties. Extensions are rarely granted, so plan your route and dates carefully.
The service fee for a licensed agency to handle foreign vehicle entry is typically around RMB 6,000, covering permit application, customs coordination, insurance arrangement and border guidance. On top of that you pay the refundable customs deposit.
See our Mohan entry costs breakdown for a full budget example.
Customs normally asks for 50% of the vehicle's value. With a customs guarantee from a qualified agency, it drops to RMB 10,000 and is fully refunded when you exit China. Details on our temporary import permit page.
Mohan (Laos) is the most popular for Southeast Asia overlanders — full guide on our Mohan border page. Horgos (Kazakhstan) serves Central Asia and Europe overlanders. Both accept temporary vehicle imports with pre-arranged permits.

Start 4–6 weeks before your planned entry. This leaves time for document checks and permit approval. At the border itself, pre-approved permits mean 1–3 hours instead of half a day.
Yes. Motorcycles, campervans and SUVs are all accepted under the same temporary import rules. Motorcycles follow the same paperwork and deposit process — see our case studies for real examples.
Deposit scams by unlicensed border "agents", permit overstays, incomplete documents and picking an unqualified agency are the top mistakes. We wrote a dedicated guide on Mohan entry pitfalls and how to avoid them.
Bottom line: the process is routine for a licensed agency but genuinely difficult to self-arrange. The two decisions that matter most: which border you cross, and which agency you trust.
A licensed travel agency pre-approves your permit, arranges the customs guarantee (saving you tens of thousands in deposit), books your insurance, and briefs you on every checkpoint. The cost is modest relative to what goes wrong on a walk-in basis.
