The Mohan border crossing connects Mohan Town in Yunnan Province, China with Boten in Northern Laos. It is the most popular land border for travelers driving from Southeast Asia into China.
From Boten (Laos) to Mohan (China) is only about 10 kilometers. From Mohan, it is a 6-hour drive south to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan — making it the perfect starting point for any China self-drive trip.
Do not arrive at the border without these documents ready:
Pro tip: Arrive at the border before 10 AM. Afternoon queues can take 3–5 hours. Weekdays are much faster than weekends.
First, complete Lao exit immigration at the Boten checkpoint. Show passports and vehicle papers. The Lao side is usually quick — 30–60 minutes.
After exiting Laos, drive across the border bridge into China. There is no customs warehouse to unload — you drive directly into the Chinese inspection lane.
At Chinese customs, you will present your Temporary Import Permit, vehicle registration and passports. Officers will inspect the vehicle and issue your temporary entry plate. This is the longest part — budget 1–3 hours.
Before leaving the border zone, you must purchase Chinese third-party liability insurance. There are insurance counters right at the border. Cost depends on vehicle size and trip length.
After insurance, you are officially on Chinese roads. The first major city is Mengla, then you head north on the G8511 expressway towards Kunming.
