1. Can I drive my own foreign-plated car in China?

Yes. With a valid Temporary Import Permit (TIP) and mandatory Chinese third-party insurance, foreign-registered vehicles are allowed on most public roads in China for up to 6 months. This applies to cars, motorcycles, campervans and SUVs.

You must enter and exit through designated land border crossings that accept temporary vehicle imports. You cannot fly into China with your car — it must cross by road.

Important: Self-arranging the paperwork is extremely difficult for foreigners. Most travelers use a qualified travel agency to handle permits, customs clearance and insurance.

2. Required documents

Before you apply, prepare the following documents for every person in the vehicle:

3. Temporary Import Permit (TIP)

The Temporary Import Permit is the key document that allows your foreign car to legally enter China. It is issued by customs at the border of entry and is valid for up to 6 months.

With a TIP, you do not pay import duties or VAT on the vehicle. The permit is tied to your specific vehicle and entry/exit dates. The vehicle must leave China before the permit expires.

4. Popular border crossings for foreign vehicles

Mohan Border (Laos ↔ China)

The most popular entry point for travelers from Southeast Asia. Located on the China-Laos border, Mohan is the gateway to Yunnan province — perfect for trips to Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Tibet.

Horgos (Kazakhstan ↔ China)

Main crossing for travelers from Central Europe, Russia and Central Asia. Horgos opens the Silk Road route: Urumqi, Dunhuang, Xi'an and beyond.

Alashankou (Kazakhstan ↔ China)

Alternative crossing to Horgos, also connecting Kazakhstan with northern Xinjiang.

5. Mandatory Chinese driving insurance

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicles in China. You cannot legally drive without it. Insurance is usually arranged by your travel agency at the border, and costs depend on vehicle type and length of stay.

6. Road rules for foreign drivers

7. How far in advance should I apply?

We recommend starting the application process at least 4–6 weeks before your planned entry date. This allows time for permit processing, document verification and coordination with the border authorities.
